Lake Minchumina (population 11) is situated near the geographical center of Alaska, approximately five miles outside of the Denali National Park & Preserve and about 145 miles southwest of Fairbanks in interior Alaska. The roughly 13,000-acre lake is approximately nine miles long and six miles wide and is the largest lake in Alaska's interior.

Lake Minchumina falls within the continental climate zone, characterized by extreme temperature differences. January temperatures range from 40 to -70 °F; July temperatures range from 35 to 90 °F. Average annual precipitation is approximately 11 inches.

Lake Minchumina II Subdivision (ASLS 81-168) is located at the northwest comer of Lake Minchumina, approximately 4 miles northeast of the village.

South of Lake Minchumina lies a combination of foothills and lowlands that provide big game resources including caribou, moose, sheep and bear, and in the lowlands, furbearers, including mink, marten, beaver, red fox, lynx, otter, wolf and wolverine, and to the northeast in the Muddy River flats region, muskrats.

The subdivision is accessible by an ATV trail from the village or by Clear Lake Avenue from the lake (approximately 800' long ATV trail to the subdivisions northeast comer).

Municipal Authority

Lake Minchumina is an unincorporated borough located in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and is not subject to zoning restrictions.

The Minchumina Homeowners Association, Inc. is an Alaska Non-Profit Corporation filed on July 31, 1985.

There are no public utilities available in this area. Electricity is through a buried power line located approximately 2.25 miles from the parcels. Electrical connection arrangements will have to be made with Minchumina Power Company. A permitted landfill site is available. Auxiliary health care is provided by Lake Minchumina Rescue Squad (907-674-3215).

There are no public water and sewer services available. Water is typically handled by private wells and sewer is typically handled by private septic systems which will have to conform to Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) requirements.


The lots are all around 5 acres in size and the subdivision is situated on a hill providing good views of the lake and the Alaska Range. The lots topography varies from being nearly level at the top then going to moderate/gentle sloping. Drainage is mostly good but some of the lots towards the bottom contain permafrost and poorly drained soils. Vegetation consists mostly of birch and spruce trees.
